About Loomings: Making, Doing, & Making Do
Loomings has moved to Beehiiv! Click the link to subscribe. Loomings archives will be removed from Substack at the end of February.
Loomings explores the intersections of multiple kinds of making. While writing and the writing life may be most present, my writing life is always informed by other generative and creative practices, such as fiber arts, cooking and baking, and various athletic pursuits, and you’ll find conversation here about how those practices interact.
Loomings is also, in many ways, about what we (you & I & all these lovely folks we know) are doing in the day-to-day, as writers, artists, teachers, and readers, and it is about the ways in which we may be making do (perhaps with fortuitous results) while navigating the forever-complicating circumstances of life.
The title of this newsletter is drawn, as you may have guessed, from Moby Dick, a book renowned for the capaciousness of its connections. I’m making no comparisons between myself and Melville, but I do believe that there is room in life and art and practice for variousness.
You’ll find reading recommendations for the books and articles currently sparking my work and joy, and you may also find the occasional writing prompt or pedagogical practice described here.
You’ll certainly find updates on what I’m writing and news about Heading North, my debut novel launching in November of 2023 from Braddock Avenue Books. You can always check in on my website or find me on Twitter & Instagram.
